About Javon Rustin

Javon Rustin is a software developer by trade and writer by heart. He started performing while getting his B.S. in Computer Science from North Carolina A&T State University. After graduating in 2013, he moved to Dallas and started performing under the coaching of Dallas Poetry Slam. Javon worked as a mentor for schools and organizations all throughout high school and college and became a Teaching Artist in the Dallas Public School District in 2017, using poetry to teach social and emotional learning. On stage, his performances are a compilation of personal stories and jokes used to tie together topics found in his writing such as mental health and diversity.

Javon Rustin has performed across the country and beyond. He was ranked 17th in the 2016 Individual World Poetry Slam. His poetry has been published in four anthologies and can be found on the I Am Hip Hop Magazine website along with other online publications. His spoken word has been seen on Button Poetry, Write About Now, and All Def Poetry. He has performed for organizations such as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Oliver Wyman, Hyena’s Comedy Nightclub, Envision Health, and DFW Airport.

When he’s not performing or writing, Javon practices his love for coding or spending time with loved ones or traveling or reading or some combination of all of these things.
